One of our members, a past president, Sherry Linn has been appointed to the NABS board. She is participating in email meetings and we feel very fortunate to get all our national information "first hand". This is a big commitment and we know Sherry will do an outstanding job.
Updates on 2006 and 2007 bird banding is forthcoming. (sorry for the delay).
Excerpts From Russell Cannings Report on Bird Banding:
" I checked boxes along routes all around the Okanagan: From Anarchist Mountain tp Cawston, and from Richter Pass to the Vernon Commonage."
"Unfortunately, the months of May and June yielded poor numbers of nestlings. Perhaps this was due toa high amount of rainfall which can make foraging for bugs very difficult and can also soak the nest and hence the young. I was able however to visit some new areas such as Cawston and Marron Valley, and areas with large volumes of boxes such as Anarchist Mountain and White Lake which produced large numbers throughout July, pushing the total past that of last year!"
"This year seemed to be a poor one for Mountain Bluebirds. Not only were they only found in three locations but their number significantly dropped in comparison to last year. Last year there was a pair of Mountain Bluebirds that raised two clutches on the Beaver Lake Road but this year Trevor Forder didn't even see one adult. It is peculiar how Mountain numbers dropped while Western Bluebird totals actually went way up. Perhaps when the rain came in May/June/July, Mountain Bluebirds who nest in the open were more vulnerable to the elements, while the more versatile Western Bluebird survived and then could more easily provide for its young with less competition. There are so many possibilities but we must speculate at times in order to gain an understanding of the natural world."
Banding Totals for 2005
TOTAL for 2005.............539
(Total banded in 2004 was: 523 birds.)
" SIBTS will have a display table at Showcase Osoyoos and hopes to have a display table at the Meadowlark Festival in Penticton in May".
The Walmart in Merritt, raised some money for "Earth Day 2007" and decided to donate it to the bluebirds. They did a fine job of raising the publics awareness with pictures in the local newspaper and donating some cash to our society. Thank-you Walmart.
