Bird Banding

The SIBTS bird banding program is just a miniscule part of the North American Bird Banding Program which is under the direction of the U.S.Geological Survey and the Canadian Willdlife Service in cooperation with other branches of the U.S. and Mexican governments and with private groups. Data is submitted to one data bank and gives much useful information about bird populations, migrations, and survival.

If you find a banded bird, whether alive or dead, and can read the band number, Please report it by calling: 1-800-327-Band (1-800-327-2263) with information as to the species and sex of the bird, when and where it was found, and whether dead or alive. In return you will be sent a certificate of appreciation with details as to when and where the bird was banded, and who banded it, as well as date and location of recovery. The bander will also be notified of your report.

You may also wish to notify SIBTS as we are certainly interested in following up with news of our banded bluebirds and others without having to wait for the news to come through channels.
